Mark
Robinson's contribution to this
album was a bit overshadowed by many of the other contributors
to the first 6ths project by The
Magnetic Fields, Stephin Merrit.
With 14 other supporting
artists including Yo La Tengo's Georgia Hubley, Heavenly's
Amelia Fletcher, The Bat's Robert Scott, Superchunk's
Mac McCaughan and Luna's Dean Wareham, each name (with
the exception perhaps of Akashibi) was an indie-rock household
name.
The story goes, that Merritt
tailored each swong to the individual artist, forcing
a song with plenty of "ess" sounds on Sebadoh's
Lou
Barlow (who has a slight lisp), pushing l's and r's
onto Sunshower's Ayako
Akashiba, and doing who know's what else to each other
artist.
I'm not sure of Merritt's
intentions, choosing an tongue-twisting name and album
title for his major label debut (released in europe on
Factory
Too Facd 2.06), but even a casual listener can sense
the strain in many of the artists voices as they try and
wrap their tongues around the lyrics.
My guess is that Robinson's
song was selected because he once released a song (as
Unrest) called "Where Are All Those Puerto Rican
Boys?" rather than on the vocal difficulty as he
seems to handle the vocals with relative ease.
Note: The song " All
Dressed Up In Dreams" with Helium's Mary Timony was
used in American Eagle Outfitters 2003 "Holiday"
Ad. More info here.
