CONTAINE "The Martyr" (Candy Ass Records 12)

"Containe formed in september 1993, when gail o'hara asked versus to play the very first chickfactor-party-with-live-music at Under Acme. Versus couldn't do it because Richard was out of town, so Fontaine Toups asked Connie Lovatt to join her. The pair was so riveting that O'Hara insisted the girls record so she could put out their first record. Enchanté's first and second releases were Containe's 1994 I Want It All [Originally slated as a Teenbeat release] and 1997's Only Cowards Walk Like Cowards. Containe toured with the Magnetic Fields in 1995, and played some shows with Belle & Sebastian in 1998. They've been on hiatus recently." — Enchanté Records

This track is the only non-album recording that managed to find its way into print and featured Fontaine Toups, Connie Lovatt, and Ed Baluyut (also of Versus). It was recorded by Adam Lasus at Studio Red.

The song was included on Free to Fight which was a CD and a thick booklet that was intended to fund a "Free to Fight Self Defense / Rock tour and be used to teach free self defense classes" though I don't thing the tour materialized.

To give an idea of what was in the book I've included a comic by Penny Van Horn.
