120 was meant to be the debut release of Ex-Flying Saucer
member Yasmin Kuhn's new band Cobalt. A CD was recorded
in 1993 and mixed by Teenbeat's very own Mark Robinson
(Unrest) and Evan Shurak (Eggs), but rumour has it that
Yasmin happy with the mixes and ditched the Teenbeat release
altogether. A few tracks have shown up on samplers and
compilations over the years, but never enough to give
an acurate impression of what the Teenbeat release would
have been like.
A year later a New York label
called Queenie
(which also released Flying Saucer's other offshoot Kickstand)
would release a 7" with slightly noisier versions
than the Teenbeat tracks and one year later Radio
Snake Charmer (Queenie QL06) was released.
Queenie was a "girl-run
record label dedicated to putting out music by women,"
(from Billboard, July 16, 1994 issue) run by Chin-a Panaccione
and Sivan Schlecter. The label put out a few CDs and quietly
faded away, though most releases are still
available (I think).
Cobalt was one of those releases
which was much anticipated and the Queenie CD seemed to
lack the delicate qualities that made the Teenbeat versions
that much more charming.
Included here is the full
band version of "Adora" which also appeared
in it's more intimate form on Wakefield/Volume 4/February
23rd, 1985 (TB 171) as part of the Teenbeat boxset.
Yasmin Kuhn wrote a nice
piece on how she discovered music for Caught
in Flux Issue #3 (September 1994) here.
Note: This is the 52nd MP3
posted. Happy Anniversary!
