"Bells
Of [is] primarily the project of Washington, D.C.-based
singer and multi-instrumentalist Lawrence McDonald, who
debuted in 1992 with 11:11, an eclectic collection of
home recordings cut with a variety of guest musicians.
His sophomore record, 1994's Two Dos or Not 2?, collected
material dating back as far as 1986, with the spotlight
on McDonald's increasingly jazzy guitar work..."
— Jason Ankeny, All
Music Guide
...and that's where the All Music Guide
description begins to go wrong. Though mentioned in All
Music Guides description, Bells Of's third album 3's
Company (TB 283) was pretty much in the can in 1997.
The album was recorded and mixed at WGNS with Geoff Turner.
However, an issue arose surrouning the studio bill and
it wasn't until 1999 that the issue got cleared up.The
album was revised with new songs recorded in 1999, but
Geoff Turner was no longer involved and the remainder
were recorded by Alex Hall at Super Cheif Studios.
Before these issues were cleared up, the
Swiss label Miguel Recordings (the
website is now longer active and the label likely
defunct) asked Bells Of to release an album: their fourth.
Four Your Listening Pleasure
compiles songs from 11:11 (TB 93) and Two
Dos Or not 2? (TB 143) along with seven previously
unreleased songs, though "Indifferent Smile"
would appear on the 1997 Teenbeat Sampler (TB
221). All songs were recorded in or prior to 1993. "Bluebird,
White Dwarf" is taken from the remaining five then
unreleased songs. I have no idea if the album is still
available.
One thing I couldn't find out was who
Peter Quinn is. He has done the illustrations appearing
on each of the Bells Of recordings, but other than that
I can find out nothing...
