The first thing
that should be pointed out about this tribute is that
it is pretty weak overall, but the Teenage Fanclub version
of "Between Clark & Hillsdale" is so bad
it isn't suprising that when I showed this CD to a friend
of mine working at Sonic
Boom who is a big Teenage Fanclub fan had no idea
of the songs existence.
The CD is all covers of Arthur Lee's band
Love. Two years after this CD's release Arthur Lee was
convicted
of weapons charges and stayed in prison until 2002.
However, their are quite a few nice tracks
interspersed and one of those is The Gamma Ray's version
of "Softly to Me" which appears on Love's self-titled
debut and is one of only two songs on the tribute
penned by Bryan
MacLean.
The Gamma Rays had two seven inches on
the Teenbeat and a handful of compilation tracks before
disappearing. Appearing as part of the Gamma Rays is Wm.
Berger (of World(of Dreams), Uncle Wiggly, Smack Dab,
and Prnicess Superstar).

Sari Rubinstein of the band also helps
to run Rubulad
in Williamsburg, "a fantastic, colorful, constantly
changing space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It is available
for rental as a recording studio, art space, and film
location." The name comes from the phone number (718)
RUBULAD, but I've no idea if these parties go on still.
